Valley View Backlit Sign

This is a collaboration between Paul Kauffman https://paulkauffman.squarespace.com and Signs for San Diego. We were delighted to work on a Paul Kauffman design. His paintings are iconic and are found in many of the Beverly Hills La Jolla multimillion dollar homes. This sign was the 2024 New Year’s party signs for the . https://www.valleyviewcasino.com/  15 minutes east of Escondido, it is a hotel and casino with a tremendous view of the valley below.

How this works

They needed a sign for 2-3 days, so durability was not an issue.  We CNC Router cut out the “2024” with the centers going into one sign and the rectangular cutouts going into this sign. We then mounted studs to set it off the backer. The mill finished Aluminum looked great, so we used this with no coating or paint. Because this Aluminum it thin, we epoxied the studs in place, where normally we would stud weld. The semi finished product was 8 rectangles.

May there be light

Here are the same numbers with the backs exposed. Each has an outer profile and an inner profile. We added the LEDs so light would project back onto the backer and highlight the number.  There is some careful placement to make sure every angle if lit and there are no bright or dark stops. Also the wires are routed through the stud mount holes to the back. These are ready to mount

Putting it all together

Here you can see the backer, a thin ACM panel that is covered with a special Sequent covered cloth. Each number is places on drilled holes into the backer, the electrical wiring also runs through the same holes. The centers of each number (like the circle in “O”) are also mounted the same way. The power supply is mounted on the back with a standard plug in cord. Now the signs are ready

The Final Product

The sign was mounted on a 10 foot pole, ready for delivery to Valley View. It is a part of a larger display of flowers to bring in the new year. It was a hit with the crowd and marks the first time electrical lighting was used in this way. This collaboration with a famous artist (Paul Kaufmann) and  Valley View Casino was exiting for us. It is a form of lobby sign
